In March, 2009, the voters get to vote for 4 (four) trustees on the
LA Community College Board. In the last election for LACC's Board, only 5% of the voters turned out. What a travesty! Surely, people must care!

Clients of Hillsides, a Pasadena children’s charity, the Sanchez* children will have a difficult time appreciating and enjoying the Christmas spirit this year. Last year, just days before Christmas, they were separated from their mother who was sent to jail. At the time, the six children believed she would only be gone for a short while and that the family would soon be reunited.
Fast forward to almost a year later and the Sanchez children still do not have their mother by their side. They will actually be without her for quite some time. The Sanchez family was referred to Hillsides Family Center, the Pasadena children’s charity that serves families in Los Angeles County, shortly after the mother’s arrest.

LACC is at it again. Yes, they are. After Measure A and Measure AA funds were depleted, the Los Angeles Community College District wants to
dig deep, deep, deep down into our now nearly empty pockets.

Tomrrow there will be 45 days until November 4th, when we will vote for President and for numerous propositions, one of which attempts to eliminate the right to marry for same-sex couples. Proposition 8 marks the first time in the history of Califoria a right that a minortity group currently has is being subject to a vote by the majority to decide whether the minority will continue to enjoy that right...
On Saturday, the countdown kick-off for the NO ON PROP 8 event will be happening starting at 9:30am...

Los Angeles, CA. For almost three decades, the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Public Affairs (PBI) has focused on state and community issues. The PBI is dedicated to the quest for social justice and equality of opportunity, enlightened civic engagement, and enhancing the quality of life for all Californians. It resumes the venerated California Agenda forum series later this month with a panel discussion on "Technology and the Future of Civic Engagement."
The PBI is also proud to announce that pre-event notification and post-event recaps have gone “2.0.” In addition to creating a Facebook group and fan page of the late Governor, the Pat Brown Institute now has a My Pat Brown Institute site for its events and issues as well as a group on LinkedIn, a MySpace page, and also Twitters. In just a few short weeks, Pat Brown’s Facebook friends grew into the triple digits and are expected to grow—especially with the panel discussion later this month on “Technology and the Future of Civic Engagement.”

It’s election season, and the first real weapon of partisanship has been fired. Although it was aimed at Senator John McCain, shrapnel has hit me and a number of my friends. I am speaking about the recent attempt by Democrats to put McCain under “house” arrest, arguing that because he cannot whip out facts about the number of homes he and his wife own, he is an out-of-touch fat cat, disconnected from common folk.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Greater Los Angeles Chapter (SHPE-LA) has an ambitious number of summer events and you are invited to the second “President’s Mixer” held this month.
Tonight’s event at the Paseo Cantina in Pasadena features Enrique Zaldivar with the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Public Works/Bureau of Sanitation and Charles Trevino with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
You do not have to be a member to attend nor do you have to be an engineer to join; but membership has its privileges and you are encouraged to become a member (and attend most events for free). Come meet the dynamic special guests, the Los Angeles Engineering community as well as eat some delicious appetizers and listen to live Mariachi music. Below is the information.

Los Angeles, CA. The Pat Brown Institute’s California (PBI) Agenda 2008 Lecture Series continues in its grand tradition with a talk by California Board of Equalization Chair, Judy Chu, on “Financing the Future of the Golden State." Once again, California faces severe budgetary crises and as policymakers debate solutions, we continue to witness the erosion of public services. Should schools and healthcare providers, who already face critical shortfalls, be forced to cut more and risk further decline in their quality of services? And with our state facing increased gridlock, should transportation funding be cut? Find out the answers to these questions and more tomorrow!

Duck and Cover: Incoming!
Canadian journalist, turned politician -- turned journalist again, Arthur Kent has a new lawsuit pending against the filmmakers of the recent Hollywood film “Charlie Wilson’s War”. The 2007 film, which did less than blockbuster box office (although a respectable 66 million was nothing to dismiss) grabbed mixed reviews. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts. The story follows the exploits of a U.S. Congressman from Texas who helped facilitate the CIA and the U.S. support for the Afghan “mujahedeen” fighters who ultimately drove the former Soviet Union’s Red Army from Afghanistan. According to the film’s PR it’s “based on an unbelievable true story”. Mr. Kent begs to differ.

Los Angeles, CA. The Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) and the Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana (HML) applaud the Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, and the City Council for approving a council resolution opposing the oppressive SAVE ACT and the general declaration of opposition to enforcement-only measures by the federal government.
“This is a good start but more urgent action is required by city leaders,” declared Nativo V. Lopez, National President of MAPA and HML.
