It's moving day and I'm between homes, waiting while the movers cruise slowly between our old house in West L.A. and our new house in Silver Lake, all our furniture and belongings packed into their two smallish moving vans.
I have keys to the new house - but it's empty and there's no DSL hookup yet. I have keys to the old house, but DSL's cut off and the floor is littered with the crap that falls behind furniture over the years - small change, spent ballpoints, ossified cookies and Bionicle weapons ...
I'm writing from the only office available - the Starbucks on Glendale in Silver Lake - waiting for the movers to finish grabbing lunch wherever they've parked our lives en route.
Stuck between. Floating weightless.
Waiting for the movers to finish their burritos and burgers and Cokes and crawl back into crosstown traffic. Waiting for our household to touch down a few blocks away. Waiting for a new life to begin. Waiting to explore the storied niftiness of Silver Lake.
Last night was Chili Thai Chicken and pineapple-shrimp curry and fried wontons from our favorite Thai joint in West L.A.
Tonight we'll be in sleeping bags on our old living room floor (so the kids can make their last day tomorrow at the old schools).
Tomorrow night - unpacking like mad, and takeout from our new neighborhood - Anyone have any recommendations?
UPDATE: It's done, all went off without a hitch. Now to the unpacking!
