The Theatre of NOTE began the annual run of its holiday masterpiece, "A Mulholland Christmas Carol" on Friday, November 25. The historical musical comedy will run from Thursday to Sunday until the last show on December 17.
If you haven't seen this show before, it really is phenomenal. Using Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" as a template, the play puts local legend William Mulholland in the Ebeneezer Scrooge roll and uses SoCal history as its setting. The songs are funny, but more specifically, they're well-crafted and artfully staged ...
And though the play is largely a comedy, the dark elements of Mulholland's history and the source material's plot of making a man face his mistakes and his hubris, gives the whole affair a deep emotional resonance.
Now, I have heard that the elderly Mulholland is played by someone new this year, and I haven't made it to the show yet so I can't say for sure-for sure, but this show really is one of the finest holiday traditions we have in our fair city. It's amazingly entertaining and you even learn something about Los Angeles history (though the very ending is pure fantasy and therefore almost bittersweet) and it's perfect for the holidays (they even have eggnog and cookies!)
Show run Thusr-Sats at 8; Suns at 4. Tickets are $20 on Thurs & Suns; $25 Fris & Sats. Call the Theatre of NOTE at 323-856-8611 for reservations. Incidentally, Theatre of NOTE is located at 1517 N Cahuenga Bl, L.A. 90028.
