Desiree Holman's "The Magic Window" Opening at Machine Project

CULTURE Please come to the opening of Desiree Holman’s show on Saturday, October 11th at 8pm at Machine Project! Desiree recreates the staging of classic family sitcoms like the Cosby Show and Roseanne, and uses these as sets for a masked cast of characters in her video “The Magic Window”. She explores the idea of role-play in her performances and videos, bringing up questions of the nature of reality in our increasingly technology-dependent world. Her work asks the viewer to question the performative nature of everyday life. What is our chimpanzee mask, where do we hide? Her show at Machine runs for the entire month. Machine Project is located at 1200 D North Alvarado St in Echo Park. Phone number is (213) 483-8761. For more information visit www.machineproject.com or email machine@machineproject.com.

The Change We Need: Can Either Presidential Candidate Reform Health Care?

CULTURE WHAT: The Change We Need: Can Either Presidential Candidate Reform Heath Care?
In the face of a faltering economy, where will health care rank among the next president's top priorities?

Just weeks before the election and two nights after a presidential debate, political experts and commentators will give the inside scoop on how much health reform to expect in the new administration.

Mark Halperin, editor-at-large and senior political analyst for TIME and author of the recent book The Undecided Voter's Guide to the Next President, takes a break from the campaign trail to moderate the panel:
• Chris Lehane, Democratic strategist, former press secretary to Vice President Gore and former spokesperson and counsel to President Clinton; and
• Adam Mendelsohn, strategic communications consultant who served as deputy chief of staff for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from the end of 2005 to early 2008. He is currently the Governor’s political advisor.

Mirror Image

CULTURE Contact: Jane Gahng, Director, 310.858.8202, jane@karenlynnegallery.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 19 August 2008

“Mirror Image” A Photorealist Group Show at Karen Lynne Gallery on September 9, 2008

Beverly Hills, CA – Karen Lynne Gallery is delighted to present “Mirror Image,” a new exhibition of photorealist works featuring a variety of artists who are continually pushing the boundaries of artistic creativity. Photorealism is a technique that captures reality by painting the image onto the canvas with such precision that the result is uncanny. With links to previous art movements, such as Pop Art and Minimalism, Photorealism has outlasted its early beginnings in the 1960s and continues to infiltrate the art scene today.
Drawing inspiration from the surrounding world or personal experiences, these images and forms are beautifully depicted as in Anna Halldin-Maule and Marcelo Zampetti’s figures or the simplicity of a lovely bowl of cherries blown out to extreme proportions in the work of Michel Pellus.

A Portrait of the Architect in Ruins- August 8th-17th

CULTURE This show is a mixture of theater, film, dance, animation, music... and some water. It's being done by the emerging avant garde theater director Sheila Vand- and is unlike any show you have seen before. The show will be going up at the beautiful 500 seat Tom Bradley Theater at the Los Angeles Theater Center on August 8,9,10,16,and 17 (all at 8 p.m.).

The synopsis is "Experience this surreal, experimental blend of story- telling that explores the psyche of two siblings who never really recovered from their big brother's suicide. While Marion Blue is stuck on a couch, convinced that nothing is real and nothing is true, her brother Elliot is in a rut of his own, stuck in a bathtub on the set of a film he knows nothing about. We enter their heads and explore their shared pain, only to realize how impossible it is for them to share it with each other."

Jesse & Jordin Live

CULTURE While Jesse McCartney has named his album Departure, perhaps what he is experiencing is an arrival into new territory. In fact, during the making of this album, McCartney co-penned (with One Republic's Ryan Tedder) "Bleeding Love" for Leona Lewis, which has become a #1 single worldwide. Several more of his compositions are lining up for release on other artist's upcoming CDs. At sixteen, Jesse launched his solo career, creating songs for his first record while performing on dozens of soundtracks. Released in 2004, Jesse's debut album Beautiful Soul sold over 1.5 million copies, while the first single of the same name burned up the U.S. charts while topping the charts in Australia, Italy, the Phillippines and Taiwan, making "Jesse Mac" a household name in the teen world. Jesse performed to sold out crowds in Europe in 2005. Jesse reflects, "Departure represents a new start for me, a new sound and this is a part of me the fans haven't been exposed to yet! This music really is my passion and I'm ready to get out there and share it!"

At an age when most teens are looking forward to a carefree summer break, Jordin Sparks at 17, graced the stage as the youngest American Idol winner and spent the summer of 2007 crafting her eponymous self-titled debut album. Honing all the confidence, class and breathtaking range of emotion that put her at the epicenter of the entertainment world for most of last year, Jordin poured everything into her album currently out on 19 Recordings/Jive Records. The album spawned two top 10 hits: "Tattoo" and "No Air", her duet with pop star Chris Brown. Both singles were certified platinum! "Overnight success" is overwhelming to anyone at any age' but Jordin Sparks is taking it all in stride and shining brightly with every step.

MULTI-ARTIST SHOW PROVIDES ENTERTAINMENT WITH A CAUSE

“Artists on the Brink” Presents “Studio 1954,” a socially aware night of surprises

(Los Angeles, CA)-Artists on the Brink, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit, presents “Studio 1954” at downtown’s ArtShare LA located at 801 4th Place. “Studio 1954” is a theatrical collaboration of artists, actors, musicians, dancers, and acrobats performed through a comedic narrative set in 1954. Performances will be held on Fridays (May 9th and 16th) at 8 pm and Saturdays (May 10th and 17th) at 7 pm.

What happens when great ideas are presented before the public is ready for them? Entertainment mayhem. The artist collective, Artists on the Brink, have pooled their talents in the creation of a night of varied entertainment with proceeds to benefit the work of local organization S.C.O.P.E., working to encourage greater voter turnout in 2008, and the Feminist Majority Foundation’s “Get Her Vote Out.”
