Foundation & Frippery: Huffington Post Comes Alive***

UPDATES BELOW

With the much-anticipated launch of Arianna Huffington's Huffington Post blog finally out of the way, the instant-mash critique (and parody sites)can finally begin.

The handsomely laid out blog/news feed boasts plenty of big names posting some promising openers, and some amusing but inconsequential window dressing: On the one hand, Arthur Schlesinger fisks Dubya and Ellen DeGeneres posts on the dog-fooding of wild horses.

On the other, Mike Nichols struggles with the concept, David Mamet struggles more and John Cusack remembers Hunter Thompson's funeral like it was yesterday - without actually pointing out when it was ...
MEDIA
With an omnivorous newsfeed, a decidedly magaziney tone (and length) for many of its posts and a blogroll already as long as your arm (congrats, LAObserved and BoifromTroy) it's definitely choke-a-horse dense with words.

What remains to be seen is how truly committed to daily (or even weekly) blogging these celebrity pundits prove to be. And whether this amounts so something significant, or just another interesting voice in the symphonic howl of the blogosphere.

To be fair, a good number of today's posts there were just author introductions with no real meat to 'em. (Harry Shearer's "Eat the Press looks promising).

And lest you think blogs can be judged accurately by their first day's work, here's LAVoice.org/article001.html. (But hey, the statement of purpose I posted a few days later still holds true).

UPDATE:
Huffington is scheduled to appear at a QnA sitdown with author Anna Deavere Smith on Thursday night at 7:30 in the 826LA space in the SPARC building - the violet former LAPD station at 685 Venice Blvd. in Venice. Tix are $25 and seating is limited. Reservations: (310) 305 8418 or info@826la.org.

Meanwhile, BoifromTroy hates on Nikki Finke for hating on Huffington.

And one Chris Kelly tips us to the launch of HuffandBlow.com, a parody site that purports to be written by ... well, here's the first post.
