Hahn's Theft: The Voters Are Coming. LOOK BUSY!

Anybody missing $700,000? Oh. It's you - the voters taxpayers.

Who took it? Jim Hahn, to make himself look good by finishing the huge Van Nuys City Hall project in time for the May 17 election, the Daily News reports.

What was previously a recurring case of pathetic election-season pandering has now turned into a criminal waste of tax money by a mayor who - while he's denying it - would do apparently anything to look more effective than he has been in the past 4 years.

Here are the sad details from the Daily News' Beth Barrett:
POWER
Copies of time sheets reviewed by the Daily News show at least $600,000 in overtime has been authorized to get the building ready for a dedication ceremony Hahn is scheduled to oversee Monday.

Confronted with that information, city officials acknowledged the actual overtime cost is at least $700,000, two-thirds of it since Jan. 1.

The project has grown in cost from an estimated $18 million to $22 million, including the overtime, rising construction costs, furniture, communication equipment and other costs. Funding for it is now $3 million short.

Most of the time sheets describe the overtime as necessary to meet a "deadline," and several City Hall sources and construction workers said in interviews that it was made clear to them the pressure was intense to get the building ready in time for Hahn to use the dedication in his re-election effort.

"We've been here seven days a week," said one worker, who asked not to be identified out of fear of losing his job. "It's for the wrong purpose: the election."
Jim Hahn's already given us numerous reasons to kick his do-nothing carcass out of City Hall.

This latest act, however, is not just apathy. It's a direct insult to the intelligence of all Angelenos who know the difference between leadership and pig-lipstick.

At some point, even the die-hard Hahnistas who would back him even if he were a crack-smoking incumbent have to admit that pushing a public-works project into costly overtime to beat election day is a naked, grasping crime.
