"Guns. We're going to need lots of guns." - Neo, in The Matrix
If you want to predict the viciousness of a political fight by the amount of cash locked in each candidate's armory, the latest financial filings in the L.A. mayoral race give a pretty good view of who's packing what and how ugly it'll get.
Mayor Jim Hahn's got more than $2,46 million to blow on air spots, banner ads, yard signs and whatnot, compared with $1.68 million for Antonio Villaraigosa and $1.58 million for Bob Hertzberg - each with more than Richard Alarcon, Walter Moore, Bernard Parks and the unsung candidates combined.
With the candidates already bangin' like 18th Street in the public arena, and Hahn flack Bill Carrick promising that anyone launching anti-Hahn ads will "get it right back in the face," it's shaping up to be a pretty grim little multimedia war ...

Of course, as Chief Parker at Mayor Sam's Sister City points out: Jim Hahn spent nearly two-thirds of the money he raised this period on legal fees (he raised just over $36,000 and spent $22,695 on attorneys Manatt, Phelps & Phillips L.L.C.). Hahn's legal defense fund is over $16,500 in the hole. Seems like all those special interests that usually jump to his defense aren’t willing to save him this time. That may be, but he's also managed to win endorsements from most of the major unions in town.
The price of horseflesh aside, here's how the dead presidents stack up for the top six money-raisers:
| Candidate | Contributions | Expenses | Cash on Hand | Personal Exp's | Matching Funds | | Richard Alarcon | $445,301 | $230,018 | $355,912 | $0.00 | $140,484 | | James K. Hahn | $2,776,685 | $834,337 | $2,461,769 | $0.00 | $519,920 | | Bob Hertzberg | $1,616,580 | $755,805 | $1,573,789 | $3,328 | $667,000 | | Walter Moore | $102,928 | $12,699 | $90,999 | $100,000 | $0.00 | | Bernard Parks | $670,172 | $433,262 | $436,788 | $50,000 | $166,937 | | Antonio Villaraigosa | $1,400,698 | $260,304 | $1,681,267 | $0,.00 | $540,873 |
Chief Parker (who are those guys?) also points out the fascinating phenomenon of Parks, whose campaign was written off in the Times last week, raising more cash this month than anyone: Here's the tally for the period of Jan. 1-22:
| Candidate | Contributions | Expenses | Independent Expenditures | | Richard Alarcon | $2,899 | $63,438 | $0.00 | | James K. Hahn | $36,100 | $58,306 | $40,226 | | Bob Hertzberg | $43,339 | $113,855 | $1,500 | | Walter Moore | $1,370 | $1,800 | $0.00 | | Bernard Parks | $103,157 | $88,363 | $0.00 | | Antonio Villaraigosa | $92,707 | $138,455 | $0.00 |
No doubt the sales reps at KNX, KABC, KFI, KFWB and all the local TV outlets are salivating - if not already doing serious business with these guys. Watch the airwaves, friends.
