If the Mouse Roars and Nobody's There to Hear It ...

Walter Moore - Objects May Not Be Larger Than They Appear
Walter Moore finally got his chance - an appearance at a debate among L.A. mayoral candidates - and it hit the mediasphere with the hollow ping of a suction-cup arrow on an armored elephant.

Only three problems: Beyond the Daily News, none of the city's major newsmedia outlets, and precious few of the bloggers bothered to cover his performance last night in Valley Glen. His mortal foe Jim Hahn didn't bother to show up. And the Rick Orlov's coverage of Moore's remarks was uncharacteristically thin. Moore got two short grafs ...
MEDIA
Moore, who has been campaigning as the self-described sole Republican in the nonpartisan race, urged the crowd to press organizers of future debates to allow him to participate.

If elected, Moore said, he would seek to end all business taxes and the city's rent control program as well as seeking to crack down on illegal immigrants living and working in the city.
Sad, really, but true. The race is driven by L.A.'s news organizations, which have tunnel vision when it comes to candidates too poor to swim into focus. Those who have enough money from private donations get free exposure and a forum for their views in televised debates. The rest clamor impotently for attention.

We'll see if Moore pulls together enough private donors (at least 300, by one calculation) to earn himself a seat at the February face-offs hosted by the Alliance of Neighborhood Councils.

Meanwhile, Antonio Villaraigosa seems to have won the hearts of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, which heard him debate his opponents last month and then endorsed him for the mayor's office (along with incumbent councilmembers Ed Reyes, Jack Weiss, Jan Perry, Bill Rosendahl, Eric Garcetti and Janice Hahn).
