Candidates Rack up $4.6 Million - Mayoral Site Check 12 *

If cash buys votes, then Jim Hahn's $2.2-million war chest reported in the latest campaign contribution filings (and today's papers) would be enough to keep him in office.

Bob Hertzberg comes in second in the dollar derby with a hefty $1.1 million raised, followed by Antonio Villaraigosa's mystifying third-place $643,253, Bernard Parks' $400,800 and Richard Alarcon's dead-last $254,438.

Well, not quite dead-last. But since neither the Daily News nor the Times seems to take Republican challenger Walter Moore seriously enough to cover his campaign contributions and Google's not too helpful on the matter, we can't say what Moore's fundraising activities have reaped just yet. Since I can't get down to the filing office today, I've dropped him an email inviting him to report here ...
POWER
*(UPDATE: Moore replied vaguely, "I have neither raised nor spent much at all.
My strategy is to outsmart, not outspend." His site says he has stopped working to devote his full time to the campaign. After digging around on the City Ethics Commission site, I determined that he has raised $3,750.00 and spent $3,754.49 - including $3,000 of his own cash.)

Last month, Moore groused rather tartly that he don't get no respect from the Times.

For the record, both Villaraigosa and Hertzberg raised money faster than Hahn in the summer reporting period, and the Timesreports they're closing the gap fast. But they're still miles behind Hahn, who has spent $400,000, apparently none of it on his dead web site.

I say Villaraigosa's fiscal showing is mystifyingly third-place only because he came close to beating Hahn last time around, and has been campaigning (thus far) in a pretty languid fashion. That said, he did only just launch his campaign in August.

Naturally, this sort of horse-race story does nothing to tell you about what the candidates stand for, or what they've been doing lately. Here's how they look online:

Jim Hahn: Google | Campaign | City site
Bob Hertzberg: Google | Campaign
Antonio Villaraigosa: Google | Campaign
Bernard Parks: Google | Campaign
Richard Alarcon: Google | Campaign
Walter Moore: Google | Campaign
