craigslist to Employers - No More Free Ads
3360 Reads

buxGet your licks in now - As of Saturday, craigslist will be charging for job ads in Los Angeles to "separate the wheat from the chaff."

This is nothing new - founder Craig Newmark initiated paid job ads in the Bay Area almost four years ago, charging $75 apiece, and indeed the amount of crap that shows up on the boards (wanted - an experienced Flash developer willing to work for 12 to 15 dollars an hour) is copious and a waste of time for anyone trying to find gainful employment.

How does this capitalist move jibe with craigslist's almost anti-establishmentarian vibe? Guess what - the list is so successful it's become mainstream:
MEDIA
1. According to Alexa Research, craigslist now gets more web traffic than any of the national job boards, including monster, hotjobs, and careerbuilder

2. In April 2000 (when craigslist was confined to the SF Bay Area), based upon a nationwide survey of recruiters, Forrester Research ranked craigslist ahead of all the national job boards in terms of overall effectiveness

3. For comparison, here are the list prices for one job posting from selected national job boards:

monster - $365
careerbuilder - $300
hotjobs - $275
dice - $335

As for the little guy - the skinflint casting directors and self-starting entrepreneurs on shoestring budgets - there'll still be a "free" job listing service at craigslist called "gigs" to be broken into these categories: acting, labor, arts, modeling, computer, moving, design, music, domestic, promo, event, theatre, film and tutoring.

The move to paid want ads came after a few weeks of informal polling on the craigslist forums.

So far, support has been generally on the postitive side, although at least one poster accused Newmark of betraying his egalitarian roots not for practicality but for greed:
To act as if you're charging fee to "alleviate" the spam on the job board is utterly bullshit and you know it. All you want is money. When it comes down to it, you're just like the rest of the greedy business owners ripping consumers off. You are a real ASS and and IDIOT! Hope your business fails and you go down like Martha Stewart!!

Doubtful. Compared with the rates at Monster, CareerBuilder, et al - It's a good thing.
