It may be a bit early for it, but the LAPD has just begun touting August 3 as the night L.A. folks should celebrate "National Night Out" to show the crackheads, burglars, muggers and gangstas that we're not afraid ...

LAPD has organized 30 after-dark events around the city so far for the 3rd, from rallies and candle-light vigils to barbecues, block parties and "flashlight walks." WORK WITH THE POLICE IN PARTNERSHIP IN PROVIDING A SAFE GATHERING PLACE, AGAINST CRIME IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. says the email bulletin to the community where I live - slated for a free barbecue that night. HELP MAKE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFER !!! It's a decent idea in concept - get people out on the streets and seen in force and unity to deny the wolves any stray-sheep targets. But so far, the events list only extends to communities in the West side, downtown, Hollywood, Koreatown, northeast L.A. and so on - and has no provisions for people who arrive late, get lost or simply live in a neighborhood too paranoid or apathetic to take part.
I'd be interested to know whether LAPD has any luck organizing this kind of thing in Pacoima, South Central etc. - and whether holding these things has had them make any dent in apathy towards neighborhood watch programs, community policing and so on.
So when was the last time your car suffered a smash-and-grab break-in, someone you know got mugged or the local graffiti rats spraybombed your wall?
