Newsblips: Revamped, Stung, Dumped & Murdered*

Quick hits from the tail end of a long, busy holiday weekend:

- Redesigned, reconfigured: blogging.la, and indeed the whole Metroblogging global network has changed its colors, and cleared away the clutter. And its layout and its buttons and a few other features. The new look favors a monochrome, less-busy layout, mammoth color photos and slick little rollover buttons for things like permalink, bookmark-to-del.icio.us and "e-mail this post". Also added - a mobile-device edition.

- Righteous Anger: DowntownCentralCityEastBlogger's Don Garza has added a Flickr photo header, an embedded video and an interesting screed against downtown denizens who protest against "gentrification" as if a better tone is the last thing Skid Row needs.

- Two-Buck Chuck, Jr.: FranklinAvenue points out that the LAPD is running a sting operation on Trader Joe's, among other stores that might or might not be selling wine to kids ...
MEDIA
- Bad Part of Town: L.A. Noir warns that the Valley has been homicide-happy in the past two weeks - North Hills and Panorama City in particular, including the beating death of a 92-year-old woman.

- Bead Trade: DrinkingLiberally is boozing it up for the benefit of N'Orleans from 6 to 10 Wednesday night at Cafe Club Fais Do-Do

- Cogito, Ergo Blog: Kevin Roderick gets all existential about whether The Valley Observed should exist and concludes, well, that yes it should. * UPDATE: Any doubts about his identity and place in the blogosphere should be erased by news that LAObserved is now being syndicated by NewsBank

- Bilious George: LosAnjealous blows a gasket over the nauseatingly yellow media-saturation carpet-bombing that Curious George has given our fair city.

- Spiccoli Wept: Whiffleboy gripes in Confessions of a Novice Surfer that the waves were mushy today at El Porto.

- Civic Service: Skunks of Los Feliz has launched a CD4 document dump at GBase, chock-full of Save the Derby news alerts and newsletters from Councilman Tom LaBonge, among other local ephemera. Hey, I live in CD4, and I don't get it either, but the Internet is a wonderful thing and at some point I'm gonna be glad I bookmarked it. The SkunkDump, that is.

- Unseen Crimes? West L.A. Online pointed out a few days back that homeless women are being murdered in Venice, but the MSM hasn't done much of anything about it beyond this. Word to the news desks at the Times, KCRW and Channels 2,4,5,7,9,11 and 13: two similar murders is a coincidence, three is a phenomenon. Look into it.
