LAVoice.org FAQs (frequently-asked questions)

Category: Main -> WHAT IS LAVOICE.ORG? HOW DOES IT WORK?

Question

Answer

WHAT IS LAVOICE.ORG?

LAVOICE.ORG is an online community of ultra-local newsgatherers, pundits and outspoken writers whose collective knowledge of their neighborhoods and the city at large far surpasses any information found in the mass media.

Let's face it: The mainstream L.A. media do a lousy job of covering the cities and communities that make up greater Los Angeles. LAVOICE.ORG aims to change that.

If you believe you're one of the best writers in your neighborhood, then speak out - post on LAvoice.org and give your home a voice.

HOW DO I POST ON LAVOICE.ORG?

Three ways. First, you'll need to register. We prefer everyone to use their real names when posting. You'll see why if you read further in the FAQ.

  • Any registered user can post comments on articles published by our Featured Voices.
  • Any registered user can apply to become a "Featured Voice", and join the professional journalists whose articles appear on our home page and in our Topics sections - CITIES, CULTURE, DRIVE, ENVIRONMENT, MEDIA and POWER.
  • Any registered user can post quick thoughts in the Shoutbox on the home page. (UNDER REPAIR)

HOW DO I BECOME A "FEATURED VOICE?"

Just click "Submit news" and write something current about greater Los Angeles - and choose a Topic. If your stuff is engaging, smart, passionate and unfailingly on-topic, and you post at least one or two items a week, we'll add you to the Featured Voices roster.

WHAT ARE THE RULES on LAVOICE.ORG?

They're pretty simple:

  • You own your own words. We offer LAVOICE as a public service to the community, but we take no responsibility for what users post here.
  • No libel. If you cannot back up your assertions in a court of law, then don't risk posting lies about anyone.
  • No threats, hostility or flame wars. Feel free to argue long and loudly. Differing opinions are what this country is founded on. But stay civil. Brains are better than belligerence.
Anyone found violating these rules may have their privileges revoked or their registration blocked.

WHY SHOULD WE REGISTER WITH AND POST UNDER OUR REAL NAMES?

LAVOICE.ORG prides itself on the diversity and originality of its members and the strength of their opinions and observations. If you're brave enough to post here, you should be brave enough to use your real name.

This is a strict policy for anyone submitting news: It helps keep the blowhardery at a minimum, and cuts down on ad-hominem attacks.

However, you'll see that while posting news stories requires registration with your real name, Comments are left open to encourage unregistered users to add their thoughts.

If you're not registered, and want to comment, please do change the word "Unregistered" in the comments form to your real name. It will prove you stand behind your words. And we do hope you'll join us as a registered user before long.

WHY DO I HAVE TO REGISTER?

Purely for administrative purposes. All your private information remains confidential. We ask for an email address only in case we need to contact you regarding your account. No one beyond the LAVoice sysadmin will ever see your email address.

WILL YOU PUBLISH MY BYLINE?

Yes. Every post is tagged with your name at the bottom. This is why it's important to register under your own name, as we recommend here.

How do I publish a blurb on a community organization event?

Just register, make sure you're logged in, and write the post. If it's truly a community organization, we'll likely publish it. If the event is commercially supported or sponsored, or set up to promote something other than the organization itself, we'll probably pass on it.
